Abstract: Dr. Balzer’s presentation will provide an overview of how IONM is administered and the keys to its ultimate success. Then, it will explore how IONM is used to detect cerebral ischemia in a variety of procedures including neurosurgical and cardiovascular surgery. Finally, a review of the statistical tools we have at our avail to measure diagnostic accuracy including sensitivity, specificity, PPV NPV and odds ratios. Published literature from our group and others will be used to elucidate how to achieve the goal of demonstrating diagnostic accuracy, the value of therapeutic intervention based on IONM changes and ultimately the clinical utility of using IONM to improve neurological outcomes.
