Polarized Instagrammers fueled media coverage of NFL athlete activism
Sport Management faculty Wenche Wang and Stacy-Lynn Sant studied how Instagram posts helped fuel the media coverage of NFL athlete activism.
Wenche Wang, assistant professor of Sport Management, and Stacy-Lynn Sant, assistant professor of Sport Management, published the article “A big data analysis of social media coverage of athlete protests,” on how social media’s influence affected the media’s coverage of the National Football League’s national anthem protest.
Their study, which was published in Sport Management Review, focused on the media’s use of Instagram when covering the protests. They found the media covered the protest more heavily on their Instagram accounts when the reaction was more negative and polarized.
