Racial discrimination linked to teen stress levels
Faculty member Rebecca Hasson spoke with WDIV about her revealing research.
Associate movement science professor Rebecca Hasson has spent her career learning about the causes and consequences of childhood obesity, particularly in multiethnic populations. One of her recent studies provided more insight about a crucial potential factor for teenagers: racial discrimination from fellow teens.
“While it wasn’t the most frequently experienced type of discrimination, it did have the greatest impact,” Hasson told WDIV. “When you think about it that makes a lot of sense because, at that age, peers are probably the most important relationships.”
