Fernando "Ferran" Prieto
Ferran is teaching SM 509: "Financial Management for the Sport Industry" and started at SoK in January.
Q: What's the most meaningful or satisfying aspect of your work at SoK?
A: I am using case studies to teach students about sports and leagues like the NFL, Formula 1, the PGA Tour, etc., in addition to bringing executives from around the world as guest speakers. I am looking forward to having energizing case discussions with the students and having them experience what real sports executives deal with on a daily basis.
Q: How do you balance your time between the demands of your work and personal life?
A: As well as I can! I am a part-time lecturer, which means I have a "day job" outside of the School of Kinesiology (I am an athlete manager and sports investor), in addition to being a father of three kids and married to my wife of 20 years who is pursuing a master's in mental health counseling. Needless to say, my golf game is non-existent, but I am having the time of my life!
Q: What's your favorite thing about the School of Kinesiology and why?
A: Its people — faculty, staff, students — make this a very special place that I am proud and honored to be a part of.
Q: Which states and/or countries have you lived in? Which was your favorite, and why?
A: Spain and France in Europe, and Michigan and Massachusetts in the United States. They all were special for me at a specific time in my life, and I love them all. But Michigan is our chosen home so I guess that makes it my favorite place (just don't tell my mom!)
Q: Who are the special people in your life?
A: My wife, Bonnie, and my kids, Xavi, Laia, and Felip (and, of course, my family back in Europe as well). They are my "why."
