Isabel (Issy) Wakefield
Q: Out of everything you're working on right now, what are you most excited about and why?
A: I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with Dr. Angela Fong in the Exercise and Health Behavior in Oncology Lab (EHBOL). It is tough to choose what I am most excited about as we are embarking on new research in EHBOL, which is super exciting in itself! As well as getting to learn and grow with the study as we progress over the coming months.
Q: How do you balance your time between the demands of your work and personal life?
A: I have a busy life outside of work with being a professional track and field athlete. I run the 100-meter hurdles, and one of my goals for 2024 is to be selected for Great Britain for the Olympics! Although it can be difficult balancing my time between the two things I love to do, each one acts as an escape from the other, which I think helps me perform at my best both in and out of the office. I wouldn't be able to do what I do without an organized calendar and a great support system!
Q: Which states and/or countries have you lived in? Which was your favorite, and why?
A: I am from England. I was born and grew up in a suburb outside London and now my family's home is in the Southwest in the countryside. I moved out to Durham, North Carolina, for college, and now I am here in Ann Arbor! It is hard to choose between the UK and the U.S., but I love the variety in the U.S. I loved the climate and scenery of North Carolina, especially with being able to go to the beach or to the mountains, but I also like more of the city feel in Ann Arbor. I think I will have to give it a few more months and get through the winter before I have a solid conclusion!
Q: What's your favorite thing about our school and why?
A: The building itself is amazing! Another of my favorite things is the range in faculty and staff interest. There are so many interesting projects spanning and incorporating many disciplines, which is very unique and cool to be a part of.
Q: Who are the special people in your life?
A: My family back home in England, my boyfriend Matt who lives out here with me, and, of course, our 7-month-old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, Goose!
Q: If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would it be and why?
A: I would love to go to Japan! Firstly, I love Japanese food and I would like to experience authentic Japanese food. Secondly, there are so many things to do and to explore. I have heard that there is really good skiing in Japan, which I think would be awesome as well as sightseeing in Tokyo.
