Lindsey LaForest (SM '19)
Lindsey is teaching SM/AES 333: "Legal and Ethical Issues in Sport" and started at SoK in January.
Q: What's one thing about your work at SoK that might surprise people or that people might not know much about?
A: I think students are frequently shocked about how often they interact with the law in their day-to-day lives and even more so in their careers. When I talk to other Kines alumni, they frequently mention how often they're reviewing or drafting contracts, dealing with compliance issues, employment law, and more.
Q: What's the most meaningful or satisfying aspect of your work at SoK?
A: Working with the students is so important to me. I was a first gen student at Kines, and the faculty, staff, alumni, and upperclassmen were instrumental to my college experience. I'm so grateful for everyone who helped me and guided me when I was a student, and I make every effort to carry that forward.
Q: What's your favorite thing about the School of Kinesiology and why?
A: The opportunities! From when I was a student to now as a lecturer, the school has so many incredible events and occasions to connect. It fosters a strong community between the students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
Q: Which states and/or countries have you lived in? Which was your favorite, and why?
A: I've spent most of my life in Michigan, but I spent a couple months studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain, during college. It was an incredible opportunity to study art history and painting within a rich culture. I got to spend the two months hiking, swimming in the sea, drawing, painting, and going to museums. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to explore a beautiful country and learn more about its history.
Q: Who are the special people in your life?
A: My family is very close, and my dad in particular has been my rock in life. He was my softball coach for 13 years, and then we even coached baseball together for a few years. We spent a lot of time on the road together, and he's truly my best friend. My dad, sister, and I have been visiting MLB stadiums together, checking them off our bucket list.
