Sandra Hunter
Q: Out of everything you're working on, what are you most excited about and why?
A: I'm excited about many aspects of my research, especially the work I'm doing to understand the protective effects of exercise on aging and in people with pre-diabetes as well as the the studies I'm conducting on sex differences in athletic performance. The latter topic is so relevant since national and international sporting and athletic organizations are currently grappling with the inclusion of transgender athletes.
Q: What's one thing about you that people might be surprised to learn?
A: I'm an identical twin: my sister is a physical therapist who lives in Australia where we were born and grew up. Also, I married an identical twin (a Texan!).
Q: What's the most meaningful or satisfying aspect of your work?
A: Mentoring students and faculty so they can thrive in their research and work life. I also have very much enjoyed seeing that some of my research has made a difference in policy at the national and international levels of sports and athletic performance.
Q: How do you balance your time between the demands of your work and personal life?
A: I always leave room for exercise and socializing on a daily basis. Both recharge me and are important long-term to my physical and mental well being.
Q: What's your favorite thing about our school?
A: Collegiality among faculty and staff and the pride in the school and university. And the branding is first-class!
Q: Which states and/or countries have you lived in?
A: Australia (born, raised, and educated in Sydney); England (one year); USA - Colorado for four years, Wisconsin for 21 years.
Q: Who are the special people in your life?
A: Jeff, my husband since 2003; Kennedy, my daughter since 2006.
Q: What's one interesting thing about you?
A: I cycled Britain from bottom to top (Land's End in England to John O'Groats in Scotland) by myself many years ago.
Q: If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would it be and why?
A: Australia; I love to go back to my country of origin. I also love Switzerland, northern Italy, and Austria. My family and I have hiked and cycled in the region -- it is so beautiful!
Q: What's one thing you'd like to brag about (personally or professionally)?
A: I qualified to be on Team USA as an age grouper in the aquathlon (1000-meter swim and 5-kilometer run). I'll be competing in Australia in 2024 and Spain in 2025 (if my knees hold out!!)
