Sarah Lessila
Q: Out of everything you're working on right now, what are you most excited about and why?
A: Having followed professor Sandra Hunter from Marquette University, I'm very excited to be continuing my role coordinating her lab. I am looking forward to building up the lab and to begin collecting data.
Q: What's one thing about your work that might surprise people or that people might not know much about?
A: The general public seems to think that movement science or exercise physiology is limited to studying elite athletes or sports performance when, in reality, every population has something to benefit from movement science research! It might surprise people to hear that I specifically enjoy working with the older adult population. They have just as much to teach us as we have to teach them!
Q: What's the most meaningful or satisfying aspect of your work?
A: Building relationships with community members who participate in our research.
Q: How do you balance your time between the demands of your work and personal life?
A: Outside of work, I like to stay active, whether it be cycling, rock climbing or running. I also enjoy reading nonfiction books when I have the time.
Q: What's your favorite thing about our school and why?
A: So far, I've really enjoyed exploring the campus and seeing how much school spirit and pride there is here.
Q: What's one fun or surprising thing about you?
A: For the past three and a half years, I've volunteered on a local organic farm in southeastern Wisconsin where I've enjoyed growing purple potatoes and trellising tomatoes the most. My involvement in community-supported agriculture is something I'd like to continue here in Ann Arbor.
Q: If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would it be and why?
A: Someday I'd like to backpack or rock climb in the Italian Dolomites. It's one of the world's best rock climbing destinations!
It might surprise people to hear that I specifically enjoy working with the older adult population. They have just as much to teach us as we have to teach them!
