Q: Out of everything you're working on right now, what are you most excited about and why?
A: I'm most excited about using simple behavior change techniques to make a big impact. Many previous behavioral interventions function like a 'black box,' where it's unclear what actually drives change. My focus is on unpacking that box — figuring out what truly works and how to make it more effective.
Q: What's one thing about your work that might surprise people or that people might not know much about?
A: One surprising thing about my work is that self-monitoring — the simple act of tracking and recording your behaviors — is one of the most effective techniques for changing behavior. It's something anyone can start today. Set a daily goal, track your progress, and take small steps toward it!
Q: What's the most meaningful or satisfying aspect of your work?
A: Seeing how our interventions can positively impact people's behavior and health, even when they live thousands of miles away. The fact that we can help improve lives from a distance is incredibly rewarding.
Q: How do you balance your time between the demands of your work and personal life?
A: I make sure to have at least one off day each week to recharge by enjoying outdoor activities like mountain biking or taking road trips to nearby parks for a hike.
Q: What's your favorite thing about our school and why?
A: My favorite things about the SoK are the welcoming environment, the excellent building and facilities, and the strong support from staff and faculty that create an ideal place to work and learn.
Q: Which states and/or countries have you lived in? Which was your favorite, and why?
A: I was born and raised in a coastal city in northeast China, then Minnesota, Texas, Pennsylvania, Michigan. My ideal place would be a coastal city that combines the winter of Texas, the fall of Michigan, and the spring and summer of Pennsylvania.
Q: If you could go on vacation anywhere, where would it be and why?
A: I would love to go on vacation to Northern Europe. The natural landscapes there have always fascinated me.
