Q: Out of everything you're working on, what are you most excited about?

A: We're currently working on starting up a study looking at the effects of high school-level participation in collision (football, ice hockey, rugby, & men's lacrosse) or non-contact sport on neurocognitive health later in life. We're hoping to start bringing participants to campus in the next couple months, so we're in the process of finalizing and fine-tuning everything before they come in, which is a really exciting process!

Kinesiology students help get patients walking through pilot partnership with Michigan Medicine

Movement science undergraduates Therese Campos and Meghan Tompkins were walking, like they do every Tuesday and Thursday between 3 and 7 p.m. Back and forth, back and forth, down the hallway of one of Michigan Medicine’s Medical Short-Stay Units (MSSU).

The patient they were escorting was very excited to be up and about.

“I haven’t been out of my bed yet,” she told them. “I want to walk.”

“Awesome,” they said. “That’s what we’re here for.”

Kinesiology faculty emeriti are staying busy

If you pop into the health sciences suite in the School of Kinesiology building on any given day, you will likely find Katarina Borer, sitting in her office, working on her research.

This wouldn’t be that unusual for a faculty member — except for the fact that Borer is technically retired.

She’s been a professor emerita for more than five years, although you wouldn’t know it based on the regular hours she keeps and the diligence she applies to the work she continues to do in SKB.

Q: What made you interested in athletic training?
A: In undergrad, I was pre-physical therapy: exercise science and fitness and wellness. My upbringing revolved around sports, and injury prevention is something that I’m very passionate about, but where I grew up, we never talked about athletic training. It was always physical therapy, occupational therapy, personal training, coaching, medical school.

When it came time for the midterm elections in 2022, the University of Michigan showed up. Its student body — both undergraduate and graduate students — had the highest election turnout the campus had ever seen.

Elana Goldenkoff (MVS ’18), who recently defended her PhD in kinesiology, certainly doesn’t take credit for this achievement, but she is thrilled to know she played a part.

How to manage the bane and beauty of injury

Claire Coates (AT ‘09) was 10 years old when she witnessed a severe injury for the first time.

She was visiting extended family in Richmond, Virginia, and they’d stopped at the post office. As her father was leaving the building, he tripped and landed on his knee. The impact shattered his patella into 15 pieces. Shards of bone ripped through his ACL.

To this day, the image of her father’s knee at the time of his injury is still seared on Coates’ brain.

On the whiteboard in Ariana Ravitz’s dorm room, there is always the same sentence: “Remember your why.”

The movement science undergraduate came up with this mantra in her second semester of her freshman year at U-M. She’d been diagnosed with Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune disorder that can cause chronic pain, on the very first day of school, and it had been challenging to navigate the past few months of college while processing a new medical diagnosis.

A: I sometimes describe myself as a 'practical artist,' in that being a designer is about creating things that serve a specific strategic purpose, not just making things pretty. Whether it's a T-shirt, a social media post, or webpage, it has to meet its practical goal first — Has it communicated effectively? Does it help its users get where they're supposed to go? If not, it's back to the drawing board!

Delving into the art (instead of science) of anatomy

The first thing the students saw were the bones.

There were more than a hundred of them, stacked neatly in plastic bins on a long table in the front of classroom 2060. Some were long and slender, others bulbous and asymmetrical. All had the same glossy sheen.

From far away, they resembled delicate china figurines. Up close, it was easier to tell that they were 3D-printed versions of the same bones you’d find in a human pelvis or mouth or arm.

Isometric exercises like wall sits can lower blood pressure

A wall sit can build strength in your abs and lower body if you do this basic bodyweight exercise for long enough. Now, new research says that eight minutes of wall sits three times a week can do enough to lower your blood pressure, too. More than 300 elite soccer players convened in Detroit in summer 2022 for an international tournament. While thousands of fans cheered from the stands, the skilled footballers from more than 20 countries ran, kicked, passed, scored, and celebrated with their teammates.

But this was no ordinary soccer tournament. This was the Special Olympics Unified Cup, which brought together athletes from around the world with — and without — intellectual disabilities.

Previous research has shown that repetitive head trauma — often associated with contact sports such as American football — could result in chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Following the largest study of brains in younger athletes at Boston University's CTE Center, it was found that a surprising number showed signs of the neurodegenerative brain disease.

As the co-author of Soccernomics, a widely lauded book that explains soccer through the lens of data, Sport Management Professor Stefan Szymanski is often asked to offer economic context for stories on significant shifts in the sport.
