Health & Well-Being
Learn about assorted resources at both the school and university level to help you balance your mental, emotional, academic, and social needs and goals.
If you are experiencing an urgent concern or crisis, please call the main CAPS line at (734) 764-8312 (press “0”) for 24/7 access to a counselor and more immediate care.
If you’re interested in longer-term therapy, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has information on their website about finding a provider in the community. For online group support, CAPS organizes anonymous peer-to-peer groups. They also have an app for your iphone or android with interactive wellness features.
CAPS Embedded Psychologist
Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) has collaborated with School of Kinesiology leadership to implement the CAPS Embedded model within our school. This model has successfully distributed mental health services across schools and colleges, making it easier for students, faculty, and staff to access services. It has enhanced early intervention and improved outcomes through clinical, consultation, and prevention services. In addition, the CAPS Embedded model has fostered a community-based approach by placing clinicians within the schools and colleges, thereby promoting a more inclusive and supportive environment for mental health.
Our embedded psychologist is Dr. Brett Smith, who completed his PsyD at Eastern Kentucky University. His clinical interests include:
- ADHD
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Performance
- Trauma
- Sleep concerns
Brett is available for individual counseling work with students and consultation with faculty, staff, and students, and will offer occasional educational programs tailored specifically for Kinesiology students.
Brett’s office is located in Kinesiology's Office of Student Affairs in room 2365. To request clinical services from Brett, please email him at [email protected]. Students may also schedule an appointment with Brett through umichcaps.titaniumhwc.com/EMBkines.
As a Kinesiology student, you can meet with our embedded psychologist or with any other CAPS staff. Please review the staff bio page to see if a different counselor might be a better fit for you based on concerns/identity/schedule.
UWill Teletherapy Services
U-M has partnered with UWill, a leading virtual counseling service, to offer all students six free counseling appointments per year, without referral. Choose a therapist based on your preferences, find the mode that’s right for you (video, phone, chat, or messaging), and pick a session that fits your schedule (including nights and weekends).
